European Webinar – CBAM Regulation: Understanding the Measure and Navigating the Transitional Phase

12 January 2024 | Events

January 18th 2024 - 10:00 am CET

The European Service Line of Andersen VAT & Customs is organizing a webinar titled CBAM Regulation – Understanding the Measure and Navigating the Transitional Phase. The webinar will provide practical advice on the upcoming implementation of the CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism). The new regulation, initiated in the experimental phase in October 2023, will become fully operational starting January 1, 2026.

Designed to address carbon emissions by imposing a tax regime on high-intensity emissions generated by goods imported into the European Union, CBAM will initially focus on goods such as cement, iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizers, electricity, and hydrogen. During the initial transition period, importers will only be required to report the emissions produced without making payments. Subsequently, they will be required to surrender a corresponding number of CBAM certificates, the value of which will be determined based on the average auction price of EU emission trading system allowances. Failure to comply with reporting obligations may result in penalties.

During the webinar, conducted in English on the Zoom platform, Andersen professionals will explore the dynamics of the new regulations and attempt to provide useful advice for import management, analyze the costs that this new system will impose on entrepreneurs, and discuss potential sanctions for non-compliance.

Speakers:

General rules and sectors affected by CBAM – Mar Guardiola, Andersen in Spain

Classification of goods and rules of origin – János Tóth, Andersen in Hungary

Deadlines, reporting periods, and quarterly reports – Davide Centurelli, Andersen in Italy

Penalties and responsible authorities – Odile Courjon, PDGB, collaborating firm of Andersen Global in France
